Chapbooks are a form of self-publishing popular amongst writers, poets, and ‘zine makers. They’re typically small and have few pages, but they’re a great form for getting the work of the creative arts into a living form and out into the world. Self-publishing in this day and age is gaining momentum as people take charge of content that would otherwise have been filtered out by very large publishing houses.

This Saturday from noon-3:30, Kassie Arcate of Mother Hen Press will teach you how to make this book form at her Introduction to Bookmaking and Non-Adhesive Binding Techniques Workshop. $45 includes all materials. You can sign up here.

I was thinking about Peter Paul Rubens’ 17th century portrait drawings just now and ran across this article while Googling his work. I like how it illustrates some different choices one can make while drawing portraits, and how the language of drawing has changed over time. I especially like the author’s emphasis on craft, with the caveat that technique alone won’t make a ‘successful’ work of art. Check it out HERE.
