This will revolutionize the way you mix paint and understand pigment. Plus it’s ADDICTIVE!

Go online to Golden’s Virtual Paint Mixer where you can either

  • UPLOAD YOUR OWN IMAGE and click on the areas you wish to mix from…
  • choose the color you wish to mix from the color field they provide…
  • choose from tube colors that already exist…
  • enter a numeric code for the color you want…

THEN

  • watch as a recipe for said desired color appears with tweaking tools to allow you to try various amounts of the tube colors recommended for the perfect color match.

Not only does this take the guess work out of color mixing, it teaches you how pigment works so you can anticipate your mixtures better, and it saves money from wasted paint.

How did they figure out how to do this? I don’t know but I’m going to bookmark it on my computer and I recommend you do the same!

Here’s a great article about color mixing from Golden Paint. It clearly explains, using examples that you can replicate, the different colors you get from different pallette choices. Very useful info and not necessarily intuitive. Check it out here.

Excerpt:

“Three Primary Color Mixing

In my workshops I teach many artists, from novices to experienced painters who have never taken a color theory class and are simply afraid of the rigor and discipline that is associated with it. Rather than focusing on theories, my approach is simply all about mixing and discovery. To accomplish this, I very loosely use the idea of the three primaries. I needed this rather simple approach because I wanted to know more about two or three of the basic pigments that the kit contains since I don’t typically use Hansa Yellow Light, Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) or Anthraquinone Blue on my own palette.

By utilizing the color wheel form for this exercise I began to compare duo mixtures from colors included in the Modern Theory Color Mixing Set.”

Messy PaletteAre you as frustrated about the mysteries of mixing just the color of paint you want as I am? I stumbled on this great series of videos from Will Kemp on YouTube that very simply explain how to mix colors! You also get basic color theory along the way.  He uses Golden Heavy Body Acrylics  FYI. They only take a moment to watch but will change your whole approach to color mixing, I predict.  Plus he has an English accent which is always pleasant to listen to!
